Asset Location: TFSA vs RRSP vs Non-Registered

A plain-language introduction to asset location for Canadian investors — the general principles for which investments may fit a TFSA, RRSP, or taxable account, and the trade-offs.

Asset location is the idea of holding each type of investment in the account where its tax treatment is most favourable. It is different from asset allocation (how much you hold of each asset). This overview explains the general principles Canadian investors weigh — it is educational, not personalized advice.

The Three Buckets

  • TFSA: growth and withdrawals are tax-free in Canada. Room is precious, so it is often used for higher-expected-growth or tax-inefficient Canadian income you want to shelter — but remember US dividends are still subject to non-recoverable US withholding here.
  • RRSP/RRIF: contributions are tax-deferred and withdrawals are taxed as income. Under the Canada–US treaty, US dividends on US stocks held directly are generally exempt from US withholding, which is why US dividend equities often fit here.
  • Non-registered (taxable): the most tax-flexible for foreign tax credits and capital-loss harvesting, but interest and foreign income are fully taxable and gains are taxed on disposition.

General Principles Investors Consider

Highly-taxed income (interest, foreign dividends without a credit) is often steered toward registered accounts; Canadian eligible dividends and capital gains may be relatively efficient in a taxable account; and TFSA room is frequently reserved for assets you expect to grow the most. These are tendencies, not rules.

Why It Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

The optimal location depends on your marginal tax rate, your mix of account balances, your time horizon, provincial rates, and whether you will need foreign tax credits. Over-optimizing can also add complexity and rebalancing friction. Many investors accept a 'good enough' location and prioritize saving and low costs.
