Estimated Tax Reports for US & Canadian Investors
Track capital gains, losses, and cost basis across your brokerage accounts. Generate estimated reports for Form 8949, Schedule D, and T5008 preparation.

Capital Gains Tracking
Automatically calculate estimated short-term and long-term capital gains from your transaction history using FIFO lot matching. See realized and unrealized gains at a glance to help with tax planning.
Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) for Canada
Canadian investors can track adjusted cost base per security, including the effects of return of capital distributions, DRIP reinvestments, and corporate actions. ACB is calculated using the average cost method required by CRA.
Form 8949 Reference
US investors can generate an estimated Form 8949 and Schedule D reference report showing proceeds, cost basis, and gain or loss for each disposition. This is an informational tool — consult a tax professional for filing.
Tax-Loss Harvesting Candidates
Identify holdings currently at a loss that may be candidates for tax-loss selling, with an estimated tax effect calculated against an assumed marginal rate rather than your actual bracket. Superficial loss and wash sale risk is flagged on each candidate.
Wash Sale / Superficial Loss Awareness
Receive informational alerts when a repurchase within the wash sale (30 days, US) or superficial loss (30 days, Canada) window may affect the deductibility of a realized loss. Always verify with a tax advisor.
Tax Year Summary Export
Export a summary of your estimated capital gains, losses, dividend income, and other tax-relevant data for any tax year. Download as CSV for your records or to share with your accountant.
How it works
Bring in the full transaction history
Cost basis is derived rather than stored, so the ledger has to be complete. Import CSV files exported from your brokerage or enter trades directly; every buy, sell, fee, dividend, return-of-capital distribution and corporate action feeds the calculation.
Lots are matched and cost basis is derived
US holdings are matched lot by lot, with a specific-identification path when you want to choose which lots a sale draws from. Canadian holdings use the average-cost adjusted cost base method, with return of capital, reinvested distributions and corporate actions folded in as they occur.
Foreign-currency trades convert at their own dates
A trade settled in another currency converts at the rate for that trade's date, not today's rate. Where no rate exists for a date, the affected figure is excluded and flagged rather than quietly substituted — putting a current rate against a years-old trade date is how cost basis silently goes wrong.
Generate the estimated reference data
Produce estimated Form 8949 and Schedule D figures for US filers, T5008 and Schedule 3 figures for Canadian filers, and a T1135 foreign-property summary — on screen, as CSV, or as a PDF summary. Take the output to your tax preparer, or use it to check the slips your brokerage sends you.
What it does not do
Knowing where a tool stops is worth more than a longer list of what it claims. These are the boundaries of what StockWatcher does here.
It is reference data, not a filing
StockWatcher files nothing, connects to no tax authority, and does not produce completed government forms. It produces estimated figures organised the way those forms ask for them, for you or your tax preparer to review.
United States and Canada only
Capital gains reporting, wash sale and superficial loss handling, adjusted cost base, and the annual tax package cover US and Canadian rules. Holdings on other exchanges can be tracked and valued, but no other country's tax reporting is produced.
Not tax advice, and not a replacement for your broker's slips
Nothing here is tax advice. Your brokerage's own T5008, 1099-B or equivalent remains the record your tax authority receives, and where the two differ you should reconcile them with a qualified tax professional before filing.
Estimates rest on assumptions you should check
Tax-loss figures are shown against an assumed marginal rate rather than your actual bracket, and superficial loss and wash sale detection can only see the transactions you have entered. Trades held elsewhere, in an account you have not imported, or in a relative's account outside a linked family group, are invisible to it.
