Track Portfolios in 11 Currencies
Manage holdings across USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, AUD, CAD, CHF, CNY, SEK, NZD, and HKD with automatic conversion and consolidated reporting in your base currency.
11 Supported Currencies
Track investments denominated in USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, AUD, CAD, CHF, CNY, SEK, NZD, and HKD. Every transaction stores the currency it was actually settled in, so your records stay consistent no matter how exchange rates move afterwards.
Automatic FX Conversion
Holdings and transactions are converted into the base currency you choose using published daily reference rates from the Frankfurter service, with European Central Bank rates as a fallback. No manual currency arithmetic is needed.
Base Currency Reporting
Choose your preferred base currency and see all portfolio summaries, performance metrics, and reports consolidated in that currency. Switch base currencies at any time to see your portfolio from a different perspective.
Historical Exchange Rates
Exchange rates are recorded at transaction date for cost basis calculations and at current date for market value. This provides estimated FX impact tracking over time for informational purposes.
Cross-Border Holdings
Hold US-listed, Canadian-listed, and other international securities in the same portfolio. The system handles currency differences automatically, making it simple to manage a globally diversified portfolio.
Realized FX Gain/Loss Tracking
When you sell a foreign-currency holding, see the estimated impact of exchange rate changes on your realized gain or loss. Understand how much of your return came from the investment itself versus currency movement.
How it works
Record each trade in the currency it settled in
A London purchase is recorded in pounds and a Tokyo purchase in yen. The market a security trades on determines its native currency automatically, and the original amount is what gets stored.
Choose the base currency you think in
Pick one base currency for your account. Portfolio summaries, performance figures, allocation charts and reports are all presented in it, and you can change that choice later without re-entering anything.
Historical rates are used where the date matters
Market values convert at the current rate. Cost basis, realised gains and tax figures convert at the rate for the date of the transaction itself, because a purchase made years ago at a different rate is not the same cost in your base currency as it would be today.
See how much of the return was currency
When a foreign-currency holding is sold, the estimated portion of the gain or loss attributable to exchange-rate movement is shown separately from the portion attributable to the investment — so a flat position in a rising currency does not read as a winning trade.
What it does not do
Knowing where a tool stops is worth more than a longer list of what it claims. These are the boundaries of what StockWatcher does here.
Reference rates, not your broker's rates
Conversions use published daily reference rates. Your brokerage applies its own rate plus a spread on an actual conversion, so a figure here will rarely match a converted amount on your statement to the cent.
Rates are daily, not intraday
Reference rates are published once per business day. There is no live tick-by-tick currency feed, and on weekends and public holidays the most recent published rate is carried forward.
A missing historical rate is flagged, not guessed
Where no published rate exists for a date and currency pair, the affected figure is excluded and marked rather than filled in with today's rate. That is deliberate: substituting a current rate for an old trade date has produced errors of tens of percent.
It does not hold, convert, or hedge money
StockWatcher reports currency exposure. It holds no funds, executes no conversions, offers no hedging instrument, and makes no recommendation about whether to hedge.
