ETF Overlap Checker: Why It Matters for Diversification

How overlapping ETF holdings can silently concentrate your portfolio in a few stocks, and how to check for and manage fund overlap to stay diversified.

Many investors own multiple ETFs to achieve diversification, but fail to realize how much overlap exists between their funds. Two ETFs with different names and different expense ratios may hold many of the same stocks, effectively concentrating your portfolio in ways you did not intend.

What Is ETF Overlap?

ETF overlap occurs when two or more ETFs in your portfolio hold the same underlying securities. For example, a US total market ETF and a large-cap ETF will share most of their top holdings (Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, etc.). The overlap can be 60-80% or higher depending on the specific funds.

Why Overlap Is a Problem

  • False sense of diversification — you think you are spread across many funds but are concentrated in the same stocks.
  • Overweight in certain sectors or companies without realizing it.
  • Paying multiple management fees to hold the same underlying positions.
  • Unexpected correlation during market downturns — all your 'different' funds fall together.

Common Overlap Scenarios

US Market ETFs

S&P 500 ETFs (like SPY or VOO) overlap significantly with total US market ETFs (like VTI or ITOT). The S&P 500 represents about 80% of the total US market by capitalization. Holding both gives you very little additional diversification.

Canadian Market ETFs

Canadian broad market ETFs (like XIC) are heavily concentrated in financials and energy. Adding a Canadian dividend ETF (like XDV) often increases this concentration rather than diversifying it.

How to Check for Overlap

ETF providers publish their full holdings lists. You can compare them manually, but this is tedious for funds with hundreds of holdings. Portfolio tracking tools like HCC StockWatcher include an ETF overlap checker that automatically compares the underlying holdings of your ETFs and shows the percentage of overlap and shared top positions.
