Yahoo Finance's portfolio tool is built around watchlist-style manual entry and a simple CSV import/export, rather than a brokerage connection — it never pulls directly from your broker. That makes moving to HCC StockWatcher less about "exporting a brokerage account" and more about deciding whether to bring over what's in Yahoo Finance as-is, or start fresh from your actual brokerage's own export. (For a feature-by-feature look instead, see our Yahoo Finance alternative page.)
Exporting from Yahoo Finance
From My Portfolio, open the list you want to export, click the download icon, and choose "Save this portfolio as a CSV" — Yahoo saves the file as quotes.csv. Yahoo's own help article describes the export as containing "basic data fields, such as symbols, prices, or dates" without listing every column, so open the file yourself to see exactly what it captured before relying on it.
Which of our parsers can read it
quotes.csv is Yahoo's own layout, not one of the 12 brokerage formats our parsers auto-detect, so it will not import automatically. If the holdings in your Yahoo Finance list came from a real brokerage account — rather than being tracked there purely for convenience — exporting directly from that brokerage (if it's one of our 12 supported formats) gives you a complete buy/sell transaction history rather than a current-snapshot watchlist.
What needs manual entry
Yahoo Finance portfolios are typically built one holding at a time — symbol, shares, and an optional purchase price and date — rather than as a full transaction ledger. Most Yahoo Finance users will find it faster to re-enter their current holdings directly into StockWatcher with the Add Transaction form than to reformat quotes.csv into something a parser could read.
What won't transfer at all
Yahoo Finance's market news feed, analyst research, and real-time quotes alongside your portfolio are part of the broader Yahoo Finance site and have no equivalent inside StockWatcher, which is a dedicated tracking and tax-reporting tool rather than a financial news destination.
