Import Your Investment Tracking Spreadsheet
If you've been tracking trades in Excel or Google Sheets, move that history into HCC StockWatcher's transaction ledger — map your columns, preview every row, and nothing is saved until you confirm.
How It Works
- 1Export your spreadsheet to CSVIn Excel, use File > Save As and choose CSV (Comma delimited). In Google Sheets, use File > Download > Comma-separated values (.csv).
- 2Map your columnsUpload the file from Transactions > Import. When StockWatcher doesn't recognize it as one of its 12 supported brokerage formats, a column mapper opens so you can match your spreadsheet's headers to symbol, action (buy/sell), quantity, and price — the required fields — plus trade date, currency, and fee, which are optional but recommended.
- 3Upload and previewStockWatcher parses the mapped file and shows a preview before anything is saved: total rows, how many are valid, how many are duplicates already in the file or already in your account, and any rows with errors.
- 4Fix the rows flagged as invalidThe preview flags a row as invalid when StockWatcher can't use it: a Market or Exchange value it doesn't recognise ("Toronto" or "Bourse", rather than TSX or NYSE), a listing outside the US, Canada and crypto (London, Paris, Sydney, Tokyo, Hong Kong), a missing symbol, an action that is neither a buy nor a sell, a quantity or price that isn't above zero, or a date it can't read. Correct those rows in your spreadsheet and re-upload, or skip just those rows and import the rest.
- 5Confirm the importConfirm the import and the valid rows are added as transactions. Your holdings and estimated cost basis are computed from this ledger immediately.
What StockWatcher Expects
The column mapper auto-detects common header names, but you can point any column at any field.

Worth knowing: a bare Canadian ticker in a file with no Market column and no Currency column is treated as a US symbol, because a ticker with no exchange suffix looks like a US listing. Include the exchange suffix (for example ENB.TO), or map a Market or Currency column. The import preview warns you about every row whose market it had to assume.
