RESP Calculator: How to Maximize CESG Grants

How the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) works, annual and lifetime contribution limits, and how to use a free RESP calculator to plan contributions.

The Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) is one of the most effective savings vehicles available to Canadian families. The key benefit is the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG), where the federal government matches 20% of annual contributions up to $2,500 per beneficiary, meaning up to $500 per year in free money.

How the CESG Works

The basic CESG provides a 20% match on the first $2,500 contributed per beneficiary per year, up to a lifetime maximum of $7,200 in grant money per child. If you miss a year, you can carry forward the unused grant room and catch up in subsequent years (up to $1,000 in CESG per year when catching up).

Contribution Strategy

  • Contributing $2,500 per year per child maximizes the annual CESG of $500.
  • If you have catch-up room, contributing $5,000 per year can earn $1,000 in CESG until the room is used.
  • The lifetime contribution limit per beneficiary is $50,000 (no annual limit, but CESG only matches the first $2,500-$5,000).
  • Contributions can be made until the beneficiary turns 31, but CESG eligibility ends at age 17.

Using a Calculator to Plan Contributions

An RESP calculator helps you model different contribution scenarios: how much to contribute annually, the projected growth of your investments, and the total estimated value at the time your child needs the funds for post-secondary education. HCC StockWatcher's RESP Calculator lets you input your child's current age, your annual contribution amount, and an expected rate of return to project estimated outcomes.

Additional Provincial Grants

Some provinces offer additional grants. For example, British Columbia offers the BC Training and Education Savings Grant ($1,200 one-time), and Quebec offers the Quebec Education Savings Incentive (QESI). Check your provincial government's website for details.
