Switching from Passiv to StockWatcher: What Moves Over

Passiv connects to your brokerage to rebalance and place trades; StockWatcher tracks the trades you've already made. Here's how to move your trade history over and what stays manual.

Passiv connects directly to your existing brokerage account to calculate rebalancing trades and, on supported plans, place them for you — it doesn't hold your investments itself. Questrade is its best-documented integration (Questrade's own site publishes a tutorial on setting up Passiv), and Passiv's pricing page advertises the ability to connect multiple brokerage logins beyond that. So moving to HCC StockWatcher isn't really about exporting anything out of Passiv — your real trade history is already sitting at whichever brokerage account Passiv is connected to. (For a feature-by-feature look instead, see our Passiv alternative page.)

Go straight to the connected brokerage

Check Passiv's account settings to see exactly which brokerage(s) it's connected to. If that's Questrade, we already have a dedicated parser for it: log in at questrade.com directly, go to Reports > Activity, and export the CSV — our Questrade parser auto-detects it on upload with no reformatting. If Passiv is connected to a different brokerage, check that brokerage's own export against StockWatcher's list of 12 supported formats before assuming it will auto-import.

Passiv's own export

Passiv also has its own spreadsheet export, documented in its help center, that produces a CSV of your account activity — contributions, buys, and dividends. That's Passiv's own layout, not one of the 12 formats our parsers auto-detect, so treat it as a reference for manual entry rather than a file you can import directly.

What needs manual entry

If your Passiv-connected brokerage isn't one of our 12 supported formats, use Passiv's exported spreadsheet — or your brokerage's own statements — as your source and add the trades one at a time with StockWatcher's Add Transaction form.

What won't transfer at all

Passiv's core job — calculating the trades needed to return to a target allocation and placing them with one click inside your connected brokerage — has no equivalent in StockWatcher. StockWatcher only records trades you've already made; it does not calculate rebalancing trades or place orders.

Supported brokerage connections and export steps may have changed since publication — verify current details on Passiv's own site before you begin. HCC StockWatcher is the publisher of this article and has an obvious interest in you switching.
