How to Track Dividends and DRIP Across Multiple Brokerages

Tips for keeping dividend records organized across multiple brokerage accounts, including DRIP reinvestment tracking and why it matters at tax time.

If you hold dividend-paying stocks across multiple brokerage accounts, keeping track of your total dividend income and DRIP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan) shares can become complex. Each brokerage reports dividends in its own format and at different times, making a consolidated view difficult without a tracking tool.

The Challenge With DRIP Tracking

When dividends are automatically reinvested, your brokerage purchases additional shares (often fractional) at the market price on the reinvestment date. Each DRIP purchase creates a new tax lot with its own cost basis and acquisition date. Over years of DRIP, a single holding can have dozens of lots, each with different cost basis.

Why DRIP Records Matter for Taxes

When you eventually sell shares with DRIP history, the cost basis calculation depends on which lots you sell. FIFO (First In, First Out) is the default method, but Specific Identification may result in different estimated tax outcomes. Having complete records of every DRIP purchase is essential for proper cost basis calculation.
