Parser Details

The E*Trade parser reads buy, sell, dividend, contribution, and withdrawal rows from the TransactionType column. The date and type headers carry no spaces. Every row is recorded in US dollars.

What transfers from your E*Trade CSV

Exactly what the E*Trade parser reads out of the file, and what you will still need to enter yourself afterwards.

Read from the file

  • Buy and sell rows: TransactionDate, Symbol, Quantity, and Price.
  • The Commission column, applied as the fee on each trade.
  • Dividend rows, contributions and deposits, and withdrawals recognised from the TransactionType column.

Entered by hand afterwards

  • Currency. Every E*Trade row is recorded in US dollars on the US market; the export has no currency column.
  • Reinvestment rows are recognised as neither a purchase nor a dividend and are skipped — enter reinvested shares as a buy.
  • Option contracts. An option row imports as a plain ticker, so enter the contract on the options form.
  • Cost basis for positions transferred in from another institution.
  • Corporate actions such as splits, mergers, spinoffs, and return of capital are skipped.

Estimated capital gains, adjusted cost base, and the year-end United States and Canadian reference reports are all derived from these transactions, so anything missing here is missing from those figures too. See how estimated tax reporting works
