Parser Details

The Schwab parser reads buy, sell, dividend, deposit, and withdrawal rows from the Action column, taking the fee from Fees & Comm. Every row is recorded in US dollars.

What transfers from your Charles Schwab CSV

Exactly what the Charles Schwab parser reads out of the file, and what you will still need to enter yourself afterwards.

Read from the file

  • Buy and sell rows: Date, Symbol, Quantity, and Price.
  • Fees & Comm, applied as the fee on each trade.
  • Dividend rows, including Reinvest Dividend, recorded as dividend income.
  • Deposits from the Deposit, Wire, and Journal actions, plus withdrawals.
  • Description is kept as the transaction note.

Entered by hand afterwards

  • Reinvested shares. A Reinvest Shares row is not one of the actions the parser recognises, so add those shares as a buy.
  • Currency. Every Schwab row is recorded in US dollars on the US market; the export has no currency column.
  • Cost basis for positions transferred in from another institution: a Journal or transfer row is treated as cash, not as a share lot.
  • Option contracts. Strike price, expiry, and call or put are not columns the parser reads.
  • Corporate actions such as splits, mergers, spinoffs, and return of capital are skipped.

Estimated capital gains, adjusted cost base, and the year-end United States and Canadian reference reports are all derived from these transactions, so anything missing here is missing from those figures too. See how estimated tax reporting works
