Parser Details
The RBC Direct Investing parser reads buy, sell, dividend, contribution, and withdrawal rows from the Activity Type column. The export carries no commission column, so the fee is estimated from Settlement Amount.
Supported CSV Fields
What transfers from your RBC Direct Investing CSV
Exactly what the RBC Direct Investing parser reads out of the file, and what you will still need to enter yourself afterwards.
Read from the file
- Buy and sell rows: Date, Symbol, Quantity, and Price.
- The Currency column, which also decides whether a trade is recorded on the Canadian or the US market. An exchange suffix on the ticker, such as ENB.TO, is more specific and sets the market instead.
- Dividend rows, contributions and deposits, and withdrawals recognised from the Activity Type column.
- Description is kept as the transaction note.
Entered by hand afterwards
- Commission is estimated, not read. RBC's export has no commission column, so the fee is derived from the gap between Settlement Amount and quantity times price — check it against your statement.
- Rows labelled Distribution rather than Dividend are not recognised and are skipped; enter those payments yourself.
- Cost basis for positions transferred in from another institution.
- Option contracts, and bond terms such as face value, coupon rate, and maturity date.
- Corporate actions such as splits, mergers, spinoffs, and return of capital are skipped, and a Canadian ticker keeps whatever suffix the file used.
Estimated capital gains, adjusted cost base, and the year-end United States and Canadian reference reports are all derived from these transactions, so anything missing here is missing from those figures too. See how estimated tax reporting works
